She tells me of the changes she’s seen in Nairobi during 78her life. It has become a strange and dangerous city, much different from when she was a little girl. But it still has its charms for her; it is her home, and she can’t imagine living anywhere else.

“I am grateful anyway to be here and to have enough to eat and a job that I enjoy with its endless parade of people—young, old, rich, poor, all alone, newly married.” She tells me that her own marriage didn’t work out, but she is not bitter or angry about that. “Such is life,” she shrugs. “We must look forward, not back.”

Her focus is on the present; she lives very much for each day. She tells me that she drives long hours and always feels the pinch of many mouths to feed, but even when she is recounting these troubles, she radiates a joy that fills the cab. It’s a joy that fills my soul as well.
